Follow the instructions below to install, configure, and use Telix. A generic version of Telix is available at: http://www5.zdnet.com/ Follow the site's Free Downloads link and then search for Telix. Click the appropriate link to download Telix.

Installation

Your modem

Telix allows you to access via modem any shared resource available via telnet. At IU Bloomington, this includes Steel and other Unix machines, the Shakespeare systems, and the Research SP system. At IUPUI, this includes Cord, other Unix machines, and the Jewel systems. This guide will help you install Telix on your computer's hard drive and configure it to communicate properly with your modem.

There are two types of modems: internal and external. Internal modems plug into a slot inside your computer, whereas external modems are connected to the back of your computer via a serial cable. A standard phone cable should be connected to the "Line" jack on the back of the external modem, and to your wall phone jack.

Note: In the residence halls, make sure that the cable is connected to the voice jack, not the data jack.

Do not use a splitter to use your telephone simultaneously with your modem. Instead, plug your telephone into the jack on the back of your modem marked "Phone". Some modems can "cut out" the telephone when you are connected via the modem, thus preventing an accidental disconnect due to someone picking up the phone.

Your Telix software

While you can run Telix from a floppy drive, Telix will start much more quickly if you first copy it to your computer's hard drive (usually the C: drive) and run it from there. To copy Telix to your hard drive, follow these steps:

Insert the Telix disk in your floppy drive.
Make sure that you are at your DOS prompt. If you have a menu system on your computer, you may need to select Exit to DOS or DOS prompt to do this. You should see something like C:\> , and your cursor should be blinking by this prompt.
Create a subdirectory in which to store the Telix files. At the C:\> prompt, enter: mkdir \telix
Next, create a directory in which to place temporary files that you might download (transfer) from your account. At the C:\> prompt, enter: mkdir \temp (Don't worry if you get an error; this directory may already exist.)
Insert your Telix disk into the appropriate floppy drive to copy the Telix files to your hard disk. At the DOS prompt, enter: copy a:*.* c:\telix
Your computer will list the files as they are copied. If you get a "disk is full" message, do not proceed. You do not have sufficient space on your hard disk to complete this installation. If you are certain of files on your hard disk that you can remove, do so, and repeat the above command.

Configuring Telix

Enter the Telix directory on your hard drive by entering: cd telix From within this directory, start up the Telix application by entering: telix

Note: Remember these commands. You will need to use these commands to start Telix on your system once you have completed installation.

The first time you run Telix, you'll be prompted to answer a few questions about your system.

The first screen prompts you for your monitor type. Select the appropriate choice for your system. The difference between Monochrome monitor and text card and B&W monitor and color card is that you should select the monochrome option if you have a green or amber monitor that displays only text (primarily used by older systems).
Next, you'll be prompted for the rate at which your modem operates. If your modem is 9600bps or higher, select 38400.
Next, choose which COM port your modem will use. External modems are often connected to COM1 or COM2 (physical ports on the back of your computer). Internal modems may be set to appear on COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4.
Next, you're asked if you want a status line on screen. Press the Enter key to choose Yes.
Next, the Telix copyright screen will come up for a moment, Telix will try to initialize (reset and configure) your modem, and you'll be left at the (blank) Communications screen, with its status bar at the bottom: AltZ for Help | ANSI2400 N81 FDX | | | | Online 00:00

Setting your terminal configurations

To properly communicate with IUB or IUPUI resources, you need to further configure some Telix settings. Follow the steps below:

Press Alt-o (the letter O) to bring up the Configure Telix menu.
Choose t , for Terminal options screen. Then press c to change the default terminal type to VT102.
You can use the cursor (arrow) keys to move up and down through the choices, and the Enter key to select. Press h for Received Backspace destructive, and you will see: Received Backspace is destructive (back up AND clear). On Off
Use the right arrow key to move the highlighting to Off and press Enter. Next, press i for the Backspace key sends options: Backspace key sends Backspace, or DEL? Backspace DEL
Use the right arrow to move the highlighting to DEL and press Enter.
Press Enter to return to the Configure Telix menu.
Next, press m for Modem and Dialing. Then choose k for dial time. Change the number from 30 to 45.
Then, press Enter once more to return to the Configure Telix menu.
Next, press f for Filenames and Paths. Select a for Download directory, and enter: c:\temp Press Enter again to return to the Configure Telix menu.
Finally, press w for Write setup to disk, and then press e to return to the Communications screen.

Making the connection

Start the Telix software if you haven't already done so by changing into the Telix directory and entering: telix

To connect via the Telix Dialing menu, press Alt-d. If there are no entries in the menu, you will need to enter the appropriate phone number. There are two options for dialing into the IUB campus network: one for off-campus users and one for on-campus users. The reason for this is that on-campus users dial only the last five digits of the dialin telephone number (i.e., 6-5212), while off-campus users must use the full 856 prefix (i.e., 856-5212).

To start the connection, use your cursor keys to highlight the correct selection and press the Enter key. You may be able to hear the dial tone and the modem dialing (although some modems come from the factory with the speaker turned off).

If the dialup pool is busy, Telix will continue to try to connect. Once a free line is found, Telix will sounds its alarm and you can press any key to begin your session. You may need to press the Enter key several times before the server prompt appears: Enter: CONNECT Resource to begin a session CONNECT MENU to list resource names Local>>_

Note: The prompt at the bottom of this message may be different, e.g., as5300-100> .

To establish your connection, at the Local>> prompt, enter: connect node_name Replace node_name with the name of a computer on which you have an account (e.g., Iago, Steel, etc.). When the connection is made, you'll be presented with that host's login prompt.

Exiting Telix

Make sure you've logged out and are back to the as5300-100> prompt. Then enter: quit This tells the terminal server that you are finished. To make sure that the connection hangs up, press Alt-h. To exit Telix, type Alt-x and press y .
