At IU, what happens when an account on the research systems is disabled?
When UITS denies access to a Big Red, Quarry, or Research Database Complex (RDC) account, the login shell of the account is changed to a special "disabled" shell. When the owner of a disabled account attempts to log in, a message appears stating that the account has been disabled. The login session then terminates.
To see the message that users see when their accounts are disabled,
log into your account on one of the above systems and enter the
command disabled (on Big Red, enter
disabled.sh ). You will see the error message, but
you will not be logged out.
To reactivate an account, the administrators remove the disabled shell and replace it with the user's original shell.
Note: Documents, files, and email messages in a disabled account are not immediately deleted, but are usually removed from the system after a semester. Mail sent to purged accounts will bounce back to the sender.
