ARCHIVED: In Emacs, how do I control case sensitivity when searching and replacing?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

The value of the variable case-fold-search determines whether searches are case sensitive:

(setq case-fold-search nil) ; make searches case sensitive
(setq case-fold-search t) ; make searches case insensitive

Similarly, the variable case-replace determines whether replacements preserve case.

To change the case sensitivity for only one major mode, use the major mode's hook, for example:

  (add-hook 'XXX-mode-hook
  (function
             (lambda ()
               (setq case-fold-search nil))))

This information comes from the Emacs FAQ.
