Does UITS offer a workstation backup service?

UITS does not offer a workstation backup service, but does offer the Scholarly Data Archive (SDA), based on HPSS software, to faculty, staff, and graduate students with accounts on the central research systems at Indiana University.

Since HPSS works best with large files, archiving critical data sets stored on workstations is an ideal use of the SDA. UITS recommends using a backup program that aggregates files and generates a single, large file (such as the Unix dump, tar, or zip commands, or the ZIP facility in Windows). However, creating very large backup files and moving them over the network may not be efficient when you have to retrieve data. Instead, it may make sense to aggregate the backups in files no bigger than a few gigabytes each for easy retrieval and restoration.

Mounting the SDA on the desktop as a drive and directing backup programs to use it as a drive is not recommended. The SDA is essentially a tape-based system, and it deals well only with streaming data. Many modern backup programs will use sophisticated file access techniques to only back up changes since the last backup. Many of these techniques are unsupported on the SDA, and will either not work or result in corrupted backups that are unusable when you need them.

The SDA is not intended for standard, departmental backup service. Regular departmental backups to the SDA would cause serious adverse effects on the service. For this reason, you must contact UITS to discuss your departmental backup needs.

The UITS Research Storage group manages the SDA. For more information, including how to request accounts, which workstations are supported, and where to acquire the client software, visit Research Storage. If you have questions, contact Research Storage.
