ARCHIVED: In NCFTP, how do I log into an FTP site with my username?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

By default, NCFTP assumes that you are trying to connect to an anonymous FTP server. Whenever it connects to a remote site, NCFTP tries to use anonymous for the username and your email address for the password. This does not work when you are trying to access a personal account on the remote system.

To force NCFTP to give you a chance to enter your username and password, at the Unix prompt, enter:

 ncftp -u username hostname

Replace username with the username of the account you wish to access. Replace hostname with the name of the computer to which you are trying to connect.

Note:
For file transfers to and from UITS systems at Indiana University, you must use an SFTP client.

At Indiana University, for personal or departmental Linux or Unix systems support, see Get help for Linux or Unix at IU.
