A number of tape drives are available for user access on steel-tape.ucs.indiana.edu (steel1.ucs.indiana.edu), which is located at the Wrubel Computing Center (WCC) at 10th Street and the Bypass in Bloomington. You can read from and/or write to 4mm, 8mm, reel, 3480, and tk tapes, in both low and high density volumes, in both ASCII and EBCDIC formats. You can drop off tapes at the receptionist's desk in WCC from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Note: Multi-volume EBCDIC tapes cannot currently be handled by the tape utilities on Steel-tape.

For a complete guide to using magnetic tapes, see:

Note: Before using magnetic tape, you may want to explore using CD-ROM for storing data. There are several locations on campus where you can transfer your data to a CD, including the SSED office and Fine Arts 215.
