To replace its aging ULTRIX operating system, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) developed a new Unix implementation based on the OSF/1 specification. It was initially marketed as DEC OSF/1; DEC renamed the new operating system Digital UNIX, and then Tru64 UNIX when Compaq acquired the company. It is a 64-bit operating system for workstations and servers equipped with the Alpha processor. Though it is fully System V-compliant, for both the user and administrator, it behaves more like a BSD system.
