Copy and paste text in the X Window System

To copy and paste text in the X Window System, the following will work in most applications and window managers. In Emacs, use the built-in commands to copy and paste between windows and buffers.

  1. Click and hold the left mouse button at the start of the text you want to copy.
  2. Drag to the end of the text, and release the mouse button.
  3. Go to the window where you want to paste the text.
  4. Middle-click to paste. For two-button mice, try holding both the left and right buttons.
