Primary UITS contact: Mark Spencer

Completed: July 28, 2017

Description: Campus network bandwidth usage continues to increase, and upgrades to the campus network core are needed to accommodate current and future bandwidth projections.

Outcome: Three major components of the campus network will be upgraded:

  • Bandwidth of commodity Internet/gigapop-border routers will increase from 20 G to 100 G. Bandwidth of campus-to-campus/backbone routers will increase from 40 G (primary) and 20 G (secondary) to 100 G for both. An I-Light wave service through Columbus will be used for the primary route; a path using a dark fiber alongside Indiana State Road 37 will be used for the backup route. (Component 1)
  • Data Center router links will increase from 4x10 G to 100 G. (Component 2)
  • Campus/wireless router links will increase from 2x20 G to 100 G for connections to the border routers, and to 40 G for connections to the wireless infrastructure (IU Bloomington only). (Component 3)

Milestones and status:

  • Fall/winter 2015: Design and architecture of upgrade created; proposal submitted Completed
  • March 2016: Funding approved Completed
  • April 2016: Equipment ordered from vendor Completed
  • June 2016: Upgrade campus in backup border routers and enable 100 G backup campus-to-campus backbone link over dark fiber (Component 1) Completed

  • July 12, 2016: Upgrade hardware and software in IUPUI Data Center routers (Component 2) Completed
  • July 14, 2016: Upgrade hardware in primary border router at IUB and enable 100 G to secondary IUB border router and primary IUPUI border router (Component 1) Completed
  • July 19, 2016: Upgrade hardware and software in IUB Data Center routers (Component 2) Completed
  • August 3, 2016: Implement 100 G links between border routers and Gigapop (Component 1) Completed
  • August 11, 2016: Implement campus and wireless upgrades (Component 3) Completed
  • October 26, 2016: Implement 100 G I-Light wave connection as primary campus-to-campus backbone link (Component 1) Completed
  • December 19, 2016: Implement 100 G I-Light wave connection for Bloomington to GigaPop link (Component 1) Completed
  • Spring/Summer 2017: Secondary software upgrade to all IUB/IUPUI routers Completed

Benefits: Provide bandwidth capacity that should serve the needs of the core campus network for the next five years.
