ARCHIVED: In Majordomo, why do I receive "user unknown" messages when I send a message to the list?

UITS has retired the Majordomo list server at Indiana University Bloomington. If you were the primary owner of an IUB Majordomo list, you can no longer use it to send mail. If you'd like to create a new mailing list, anyone with an IU Network ID username and passphrase can request a LISTSERV list. For instructions, see ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I request a new LISTSERV list? Also, for a collection of documents with general LISTSERV information, and information about owning and subscribing to LISTSERV lists at IU, see the Knowledge Base menu ARCHIVED: LISTSERV, distribution lists, and mass mailing.

If you receive persistent messages from the Majordomo server with the "user unknown" error message, you probably have one or more invalid mail addresses on your list.

If you are getting returned messages from strangely formatted mail addresses, it's very likely that you didn't disable your signature file, or didn't send your creation message in plain text when you created the Majordomo list. In this case, you will have to send email to your Majordomo administrators, asking them to remove the bogus addresses from your Majordomo list. For information on how to see a complete list of all addresses on your Majordomo list, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: For my Majordomo list, how do I get a list of all the subscribers?
