Outlook Express 5 or Entourage

To set up Outlook Express 5 or Entourage for Mac OS to read newsgroups:

  1. Open Outlook Express or Entourage, and from the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. Click the News tab, and then click New.
  3. The Account Setup Assistant should start. If the Account Assistant doesn't start automatically, click Assist me. Choose your email address, and type the name of your organization (e.g., Indiana University). Click the right arrow at the bottom of the window.
  4. Type the address of the news server.
  5. If your news server requires authentication, check the box next to My news server requires me to log on; otherwise, click the right arrow at the bottom of the window.
  6. If you indicated that you need to log into your server, put your username and password in the next window that appears. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the window. If you indicated that you don't need to authenticate, this window will not appear.
  7. You will be asked to create a name for this account. You can name it anything you want. Then click Finish.
  8. Back in the main window, your news server should appear in the Folder List. Click its icon.
  9. You will be asked if you want to download the list of newsgroups from the server. Click OK or Receive to download the list of newsgroups. This may take quite a while, especially if you have a dial-up connection.
  10. When the list has completely downloaded, the newsgroups will appear in the main window. To subscribe to a group, click it in the window. Then, from the Edit menu, select Subscribe.
  11. To view a group, double-click it. Another window will open with the contents of the newsgroup. You'll be able to browse, read, and reply to articles from here.
  12. Once you have subscribed to all the newsgroups you want, from the View menu, select Subscribed Only to hide the other groups.

Outlook Express 4

  1. Open Outlook Express, and from the Edit menu, select Preferences....
  2. In the Preferences window, on the left, under Accounts, click News.
  3. Click New Server....
  4. In the New Account window, type a name for this news server configuration. This can be anything you'd like. Then click OK.
  5. Next to "Server address:", enter the address of your news server.
  6. If your news server requires authentication, enter your username and password. Click OK.
  7. Back in the Outlook Express window, your news server should appear in the Folder List. Click its icon.
  8. You will be asked if you want to download the list of newsgroups from the server. Click Yes to download the list of newsgroups. This may take quite a while, especially if you have a dial-up connection.
  9. When the list has completely downloaded, the newsgroups will appear in the Outlook Express window. To subscribe to a group, click it in the window. Then, from the Tools menu, select Subscribe.
  10. To view a group, double-click it. Another window will open with the contents of the newsgroup. You'll be able to browse, read, and reply to articles from here.
  11. Once you have subscribed to all the newsgroups you want, from the View menu, select Subscribed Only to hide the other groups.
