ARCHIVED: Make an IMAP connection to your Exchange account in Outlook for Windows

Important:
Although you can configure Microsoft Outlook in Windows to read your IU Exchange mail using IMAP, UITS recommends not doing so, as it will provide limited functionality. Instead, UITS recommends configuring Outlook to access the IU Exchange server directly; for instructions, see ARCHIVED: Set up Outlook for Windows to access your IU Exchange account.
Important:
The IU Exchange Online environment does not support IMAP. See Configure your mail client for Exchange Online.
Note:

To configure Microsoft Outlook for Windows to read your IU Exchange mail using IMAP:
- In Microsoft Outlook 2016, 2013, or 2010, from the menu, select twice.
- In the tab, click .
- From the "Add New Account" window:
- In Outlook 2016, select .
- In Outlook 2013 or 2010, select .
- Click .
- Under "Choose Service":
- In Outlook 2016, select or .
- In Outlook 2013 and 2015, select .
- Click .
- Under "Internet E-mail Settings" or "POP and IMAP Account Settings":
- Under "User Information", enter your full name and your email address.
- Under "Server Information", next to "Account Type", select from the drop-down list.
- Next to "Incoming mail server", enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu
. - In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type
mail-relay.iu.edu
. - Under "Logon Information", enter your IU username.
Do not select
.
- Click , and then, on the tab, select .
- On the
- Under "Incoming server (IMAP)", next to "Use the following type of encrypted connection", select from the drop-down list.
- Under "Outgoing server (SMTP)", next to "Use the following type of encrypted connection", select from the drop-down list.
tab:
- Next to "Outgoing server (SMTP):", change the port number from 25 to 465.
- Click IU passphrase:
- To finish the test, enter your passphrase and click .
- To exit, click .
If the test completes successfully, click
, and then click .If the test fails, errors will be listed on the Support Center for help. Click , and then click .

, and then click . Outlook will test the account settings, and prompt you to enter your - Click to close the "Account Settings" window.
Note:
If you have folders in Exchange via IMAP that don't appear in Outlook:
- After following the steps above, and making sure Outlook can download messages from your Inbox, select your (IMAP) Inbox from the Navigation Pane, and then, on the tab, click .
- In the "IMAP Folders" window, click .
- Click to select a folder you would like to access in Outlook, and then click . A folder icon will appear next to the folder you chose. Repeat this for other folders you want to add.
- When you're finished, click , and then click .
