ARCHIVED: In Mac OS or Mac OS X, how do I access the CFS?
On this page:
Overview
Note: UITS has retired CFS. A
new file storage service for researchers became available in a public
test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see ARCHIVED: Research File System (RFS) at Indiana University
Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu
is being
decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell
IU.EDU
.
To access your CFS space at Indiana University, you must have a connection established to the Internet. This can be a network connection on campus (for example, via Ethernet in campus housing or in your office), a dial-in connection to the IU Bloomington or IUPUI modem pool, or any connection through an outside Internet service provider (ISP). For instructions on setting up a connection to the modem pools, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: How do I configure my Mac OS PPP client to use the IUB or IUPUI modem pools?
There are four ways you can access the CFS in Mac OS or Mac OS X: via the web, AppleShare, Server Message Block (SMB), or secure FTP (SFTP).
Access via the web
To access CFSWeb, the web interface to the CFS, you will need to have a current web browser that supports secure connections via the SSL protocol. In your browser, go to:
http://cfs.iu.edu/username
Replace username
with your username.
Once you enter this address, a dialog box will appear prompting you to enter your CFS username and password.
Note: Do not attempt to upload or download Mac OS applications using the web client unless you have first encoded them. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Mac OS and Mac OS X, how do I compress and archive folders, files, and applications with StuffIt?
For more information about using CFSWeb, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, what is CFSWeb, and how do I use it?
Access via AppleShare
To mount your CFS space using AppleShare, you must be running Mac OS 8.0 or higher and have a connection to the Internet.
Mounting a volume to CFS in Mac OS X
- In the Finder, from the menu, select .
- In the
Connect to Server
window, in the "Address:" field, enter:afp://cfs.iu.edu/username
Replace
username
with your username. - Click the authentication window that appears, enter your CFS username and password next to "Name:" and "Password:", respectively, and then click . button. In the
Mounting a volume to CFS in Mac OS 8.x and 9.x
- From the Apple menu, select . In the window that appears, click the icon.
- Click the button.
- In the box that opens, under "Enter the Server Address:", enter:
cfs.iu.edu
- Click . In the authentication box that appears, enter your CFS username and password next to "Name:" and "Password:", respectively, then click .
- In the box that appears, click your username, then click .
Access via SMB
To mount your CFS space using SMB, the sharing protocol used in Windows, you must have Mac OS X 10.1 or later. You can connect this way from a networked computer on campus or through a dial-in connection to the IU modem pools, but not through an outside ISP.
Note: Because you cannot access the resource forks of files while you are connected using SMB, do not attempt to modify, upload, or download Mac OS applications while you are connected to CFS in this fashion. First, you must encode the files as described in the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Mac OS and Mac OS X, how do I compress and archive folders, files, and applications with StuffIt?
To access your CFS space over SMB, follow these directions:
- In the Finder, from the menu, select .
- In the
Connect to Server
window, in the "Address:" field, enter:smb://cfs.iu.edu/username
Replaceusername
with your username. Click the button. - In the authentication window that opens, under "Workgroup/Domain",
type
ADS
. Then, under "Username" and "Password", enter your CFS username and password. Click .
Access via SFTP
If you are an IU student, faculty member, or staff member, you can download MacSFTP, an SFTP client for Mac OS, from IUware Online at:
http://iuware.iu.edu/
For instructions on using this software to transfer files, see the
Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Mac OS X, how do I use Cyberduck to transfer files over SFTP? To connect to the CFS, use
the hostname cfs.iu.edu
.
