Disable Windows ADS network settings after you leave the IU network

Before you begin
To disable your ADS network settings in Windows 11 or Windows 10 after you leave the Indiana University network, you'll first need to know the password for the device's administrator account. If you don't, it's a good idea to change it:
- Search for
Local Users and Groups
. Click to open it. - In the left pane of the window, click the arrow next to "Local Users and Groups" to expand it, and select the subfolder.
- At the right, find the account with the description "Built-in account for administering the computer/domain". By default, the account is named Administrator. Right-click it and choose .
- Enter a new password for the account and confirm it. Click .

- Log in with an administrator account.
- Go to , and then select .
- Click .
- Click , and then .
- When prompted with "Are you sure you want to remove this account?", click . When asked, "Disconnect from the organization?", click .
- The "Enter alternate account info" window will open. In the "User name" field, type your local account name (for example,
LocalAccount
). In the "Password" field, type your local account password. Click . - In the "Restart your PC" dialog box that appears, click to restart your computer.
Unjoin from the ADS Domain in Windows 10
- Search for
Advanced System Settings
, and click to open it. You may be prompted to authenticate as an administrator. - In the "System Properties" window, select the tab, and then click .
- Under "Member of", select . In the field provided, type any name you would like, and then click .
- You will then be prompted with the "Local Username And Password" window for authentication. In the "Name:" field, type your computer name and local account name (for example,
bl-rh-username\LocalAccount
). In the "Password:" field, type your local account password. Click . - In the "System Settings Change" dialog box that appears, click to automatically restart your computer.
