ARCHIVED: In Outlook Express 6, why can't I open attachments?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Outlook Express 6 has a default security feature that blocks access to email attachments that could contain viruses. Blocked attachments will appear grayed out and unclickable.

Note: This security feature doesn't actually scan attachments for viruses; rather, it simply blocks access to attachments which are of certain file types (e.g., executables) commonly used to transmit viruses. You should scan any files you choose to download with antivirus software before using them.

To disable this default security setting:

  1. In Outlook Express, from the Tools menu, select Options....
  2. Click the Security tab, and then uncheck the option Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.
  3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
