ARCHIVED: With a BlackBerry, how do I send PIN-to-PIN messages?

Warning: UITS does not recommend sending PIN-to-PIN messages. Such messages transmit in plaintext without encryption, allowing anyone who intercepts them to read them. When using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Redirector, all email messages are Triple DES encrypted when traveling between your device and your Exchange mailbox, ensuring they are indecipherable by anyone who might intercept them.

Each BlackBerry device is assigned a unique eight-digit number called a personal identification number (PIN). To find your BlackBerry's PIN, select the Options icon (the pocketknife), and then click Status. The PIN will appear in the Status screen.

To send a message directly to a BlackBerry user's PIN:

  • If the PIN is associated with one of your contacts:
    1. Open the Messaging application and select the Compose icon (the open envelope and pencil).
    2. In the "To:" list, scroll to the correct contact, and then click the trackball to display a drop-down menu for the contact.
    3. Select PIN from the menu for the contact. On newer models, the option for choosing the message type (Email, PIN, SMS Text, MMS, or Enterprise IM) may display prior to selecting the contact.
    4. Compose your message, and send it as usual. The message will be routed using the PIN instead of the email address.

Note: The next time you use the Enter key to select the same contact, any message you send will still be routed to the PIN. To reset the contact so messages are routed to the email address, follow the directions above, but select Email rather than PIN from the menu.

  • If the PIN is not associated with one of your contacts:
    1. Open the Messaging application and select the Compose icon (the open envelope and pencil).
    2. Scroll up to [Use Once] at the top of the "To:" list, and click the trackwheel to display a drop-down menu.
    3. From the menu, select PIN. Enter the PIN, and press Enter.
    4. Compose your message, and send it as usual.
