About iStream at IU

Indiana University's iStream service has reached end of life and is being retired; it has been replaced by Zoom and Kaltura. If you use the iStream service, UITS encourages you to move to Zoom or Kaltura as soon as possible.

The UITS iStream service provides streaming and recording of classes, lectures, meetings, and other events at Indiana University. The IU video bridge is the source of content for iStream. When you make an iStream request, you'll indicate a conference number and a time range, and anything occurring in that conference during the times you've indicated will be streamed and recorded. For instructions for creating and joining an IU videoconference, see Create or join a videoconference at IU.

Requesting an iStream

To request an iStream, complete the appropriate web form for either a one-time event or a recurring class. Requests are scheduled on a first come, first served basis, and UITS recommends that you submit your request at least one week in advance.

Live streams

After you submit an iStream request, you'll receive an email confirmation containing the live URL for your event. This URL is publicly viewable; iStream does not support any method of restricting the viewing audience.

Live streams can be viewed on most devices with a web browser. Many devices (including those using Windows and OS X) require Adobe Flash Player; see http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer.html.

The event organizer decides whether to advertise videoconference information or the live iStream URL. Directing viewers to the live URL will result in fewer participants in the videoconference and is generally recommended. For viewers to contribute video or audio or share their screens, they must join the conference. For conference connection instructions, see Create or join a videoconference at IU.

Archived recordings

All iStream recordings are delivered to Kaltura and will be available shortly after the live stream ends; the exact time to publish varies depending on the length of the recording. By default, iStream recordings are visible only to the event organizer. For instructions for publishing a recording or transfering ownership, see Control media access in Kaltura.

Recordings are stored in Kaltura indefinitely, but if you wish, you can download a copy of your recording to store or publish elsewhere. For instructions, see Download media in Kaltura.

Canvas integration

When you request an iStream, you have the option to enter a Canvas site URL. If you do, your recording will be published to that Canvas site in the Kaltura Media Gallery. If you don't enter a Canvas site URL in your iStream request, you can still publish to a Canvas course by navigating to the Kaltura Media Gallery and clicking Add Media.

Publishing to the Kaltura Media Gallery does not create a separate copy of your media. Rather, it links to the media in your My Media area. Any changes you make to the video in My Media will also be reflected in Canvas.

After you submit an iStream request, you'll receive an email confirmation containing the live URL for your event. This allows organizers to distribute and advertise the live URL before their event. Some organizers may also wish to distribute the archive URL ahead of time; however, this is difficult because Kaltura URLs are created after the live stream ends.

If you wish to distribute both live and archive URLs for your event ahead of time, UITS recommends using Go.IU. This service allows you to alter the destination link, so your Go.IU link can point to the live URL until the archive URL is available.

To use a Go.IU link:

  1. Log into http://go.iu.edu/.
  2. In the "Long URL" field, enter your live stream URL.
  3. In the "Description" field, enter the name of your event.
  4. Click Shorten.
  5. Advertise the displayed short URL.
  6. After your event, log into Kaltura and record the archive URL for your event.
  7. Log into http://go.iu.edu.
  8. Find the short URL for your event and click Edit.
  9. In the "Long URL" field, enter the archive URL for your event.
  10. Click Update.
