Read your IU Exchange email

On this page:

  • You can read your Indiana University Exchange email with most popular email clients. However, UITS recommends configuring Outlook to communicate directly with the IU Exchange server for best support of calendars, scheduling, and other features. Other web-based, IMAP, and mobile clients vary in functionality. For instructions, follow the links in the Full-featured clients section, below.
  • Although UITS has tested the email clients listed below and supports their use, other clients may work as well; for general instructions, see Configure your email client to work with IU email systems if it isn't covered in the Knowledge Base.

Select email apps available on these mobile platforms can use Exchange ActiveSync to synchronize your mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks with the IU Exchange server over Wi-Fi or your cellular network; however, the availability and functionality of Exchange features may differ depending on the email app you choose.

IU allows Exchange partnerships with up to 10 mobile devices. If you experience issues setting up an Exchange account on your mobile device, you may want to verify how many devices you have partnered with Exchange; see Manage your Exchange ActiveSync device in Outlook Web App.

Recommended browsers: Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11

On January 12, 2016, Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer versions prior to version 11. UITS strongly recommends that you upgrade to a new operating system if your current system does not support Internet Explorer 11. If you experience difficulty with Internet Explorer, make sure compatibility mode is turned off.
IMAP connections
Although you can configure Microsoft Outlook in Windows to read your IU Exchange mail using IMAP, UITS recommends not doing so, as it will provide limited functionality. Instead, UITS recommends configuring Outlook to access the IU Exchange server directly; for instructions, see Set up Outlook for Windows to access your IU Exchange account.
Through Exchange Web Services, macOS does give access to a basic set of Exchange features through Mail, Contacts, and iCal; however, its implementation of Exchange is still limited with respect to the needs of advanced users.
