Features

Caller ID with call waiting

With caller ID equipment, you can view the originating phone number of an incoming call prior to answering. If you are on the line and have the appropriate equipment, you can view the phone number of the second incoming call. The name of the caller will not display. Some off-campus calls may not display. You must provide your own equipment.

Call waiting

When you are on a call, a tone indicates that a second person is calling. The caller hears only normal ringing. You can deactivate call waiting when using a modem or when you do not want to be interrupted.

  • To complete your original call, before answering the waiting call, complete your original call and replace the handset. The waiting call automatically rings to your telephone.
  • To retain your original call and answer the waiting call, ask the original person to hold, and press the Flash button (looks like a lightning bolt). The first call is now on hold and you are connected to the second call.

Note: If your telephone doesn't have a Flash button, depress and release the switch hook (the mechanism that makes the phone hang up) when the instructions indicate to use the Flash button. (If you are using a cordless phone, consult your owner's manual.)

  • You can use the Flash button to alternate between the two calls; each time you press it, the call you were on is placed on hold. If one person hangs up, press the Flash button to return to the other caller.
  • To cancel call waiting for one call, dial *96 and listen for the stutter dial tone. Dial the telephone number you wish to call. When you complete your call, call waiting will be automatically restored.
  • If you are using call waiting in conjunction with voice mail, the second incoming call will not be routed to your voice mailbox if you choose not to answer.

Three-way calling

This feature lets you talk to two parties simultaneously on a single call. You may dial an on-campus or local number to reach the third party.

Call forwarding

At IUB and IUPUI, the call forwarding feature allows you to forward all of your incoming campus housing calls to another number. Calls can be transferred to on-campus or off-campus local numbers. You can continue to make outgoing calls while your incoming calls are being forwarded.

Note: Calls cannot be forwarded to long distance numbers.

To activate call forwarding:

  1. Lift the handset and dial *70.
  2. Listen for a stutter dial tone.
  3. Dial the number to which you would like your calls forwarded (e.g., 5-xxxx, 9-xxx-xxxx). Dial exactly as you would if you were placing the call.
  4. Listen for a confirmation tone and replace the handset.

To deactivate call forwarding:

  1. Lift the handset and dial #70 (IUB) or *71 (IUPUI).
  2. Listen for a confirmation tone.
  3. Replace the handset.
