ARCHIVED: At IUB and IUPUI, how do I use Speed Calling from my office telephone?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.
Note:
The following applies only to traditional phones. If your traditional phone has been replaced by the UniCom service (using Skype for Business and/or a USB or IP phone), see ARCHIVED: UniCom (unified communications).

Speed Calling allows you to establish a list of frequently called numbers and assign a one- or two-digit code to access a particular number on the list from the touch pad. These numbers are stored on your telephone line rather than the telephone device. You are limited to dialing 24 digits per Speed Call.

Note: For instructions on storing phone numbers on your telephone itself, see ARCHIVED: Store and then dial other numbers on your office phone

This feature comes in three varieties:

  • Speed Call Short allows you to build a list of up to 10 frequently called numbers using the digits 0 to 9.
  • Speed Call Long allows you to build a list of up to 30 frequently called numbers using the digits 00 to 29.
  • Speed Call User is used in conjunction with Speed Call Long, and allows a group of people to share the list of saved numbers. One member of the group, who must have the Speed Call Long feature, is designated as the controller of the list. Only the controller can make changes to the list, but all members of the group can dial any saved number on the list.

To program Speed Calling:

  1. Lift the handset or press the Handsfree button. For Speed Call Short, dial *77. For Speed Call Long, dial *78. For Meridian Business Set users, see the Optional instructions for Meridian Business Set users section.
  2. Listen for the special dial tone. Dial the digit(s) to which you would like to assign a telephone number (between 0 and 9 for Speed Call Short or between 00 and 29 for Speed Call Long).
  3. Dial the telephone number you want to store, e.g., 5-xxxx or 9-332-xxxx. Dial exactly as you would to place the call.

Note: If the number requires a pause in dialing (e.g., after dialing 9 to reach an outside line, or after dialing an international code), press Pause (if your phone has a Pause button) at the appropriate place when entering the number.

  4. Press # , listen for the confirmation tone, and then hang up.

Repeat the above steps to add additional numbers. To change a number, follow the same steps, and enter a new number in place of an existing number. To delete a number, enter # after you dial the digit between 0 and 9.

To dial a call using Speed Calling:

  1. Lift the handset or press the Handsfree button.
  2. Dial * and then the code for the telephone number you wish to call. For Speed Call Short, this will be a one-digit number between 0 and 9. For Speed Call Long, this will be a two-digit number between 00 and 29.
  3. Press # to dial your call.

Optional instructions for Meridian Business Set users

If you use a Meridian Business Set, you have the option of storing your Speed Call numbers in your telephone instead of on your telephone line. If you would prefer that these numbers be stored on your telephone line, follow the steps above. If you would prefer that these numbers be stored in your telephone:

  1. Press the Speed Call button.
  4. Press #, and then press the Speed Call button.

To dial a Speed Call from a Meridian Business Set programmed in this fashion, lift the handset or press the Handsfree button, then press the Speed Call Button, and then dial the one- or two-digit code to which the number is stored.
