Impact on existing Microsoft accounts

If you created a personal Microsoft account name ending with @iu.edu prior to August 15, 2016, you may experience a change in how you access Microsoft services. For some Microsoft services, you may see a login screen that requires additional steps for authenticating. This happens when two Microsoft accounts share the same email address: A "Work or school" account created by IU, and the original "Personal" account (also called "Microsoft" account on some login screens) that you created.

After entering your username@iu.edu address in the email field, you will be prompted to choose one of the following:

  • Work or school: Selecting Work or school account will redirect you to IU's Central Authentication Service (CAS).
  • Personal: Selecting Personal account will take you to a new login screen where you can enter your personal Microsoft account credentials.
Multiple Microsoft accounts

You will see the "Work or school" or "Personal" prompt every time you attempt to log into that Microsoft service, and you can switch between the two accounts any time you are prompted to log in again. If you stored files in a personal account, you can only access them when you're signed into your personal account, and vice versa.

For more about authenticating in Office 2016, see About Microsoft 365 at IU.

When to sign in with a new Office 365 @iu.edu account

If you don't have a personal Microsoft @iu.edu account, the only time you should ever need to sign in with your new Office 365 @iu.edu account is when you're prompted to activate your installation of Office 2016. For more about Office 365 and activating Office 2016, see About Microsoft 365 at IU.

Separating "Personal" and "Work or school" Microsoft accounts

You can separate these accounts by following Microsoft's instructions at Rename your personal account.
