About international phone numbers and Two-Step Login (Duo) at IU

In order for Two-Step Login (Duo) to work properly if your smartphone has a non-U.S. or Canadian phone number, you need to enroll your device as a "smartphone without using a phone number", noted in Getting started with Two-Step Login (Duo) at IU.

The reason for this is that Two-Step Login at IU is currently unable to send phone calls or text messages to numbers outside the U.S. or Canada. If you attempt to enter a non-U.S. or Canadian phone number when enrolling a cell (simple) phone, landline, or Google Voice phone number, you will be prohibited from doing so; however, if you enter a non-U.S. or Canadian phone number when enrolling a smartphone, you'll be allowed to do so, leaving the impression that you can receive a phone call or text message from Duo, but neither will work.
