As an STC partner, how do I report build-process problems to STC Development?

If you partner with the Student Technology Centers to deliver a common STC lab build to workstations in your department or on your campus, you may occasionally encounter problems placing the STC build on your hardware. To report these issues, email STC Help, including as much of the following information as possible:

  • Logs: You should see several logs (typically two or three) that start with SMSTS. Copy all of these logs from the local computer and send them with your report. To get the logs, press F8 when the error is displaying on the screen to open a command prompt. Where you are in the build process will determine where the SMSTS log will be located; see Log file locations below.
  • Error code: This code will display on the screen when the build fails. It will take the form of "0x0000000".
  • When the build failed: For example, right after clicking the first Next, right after selecting the task sequence, etc.
  • Error message on the screen (if any): The most common of these are "There are no task sequences available for this computer" and "An error occurred when..."
  • Name of workstation: Include both the initial (pre-build) name and the new one, if different.
  • IP Address and Subnet Mask
  • Workstation MAC address
  • Workstation make and model
  • Date of the folders in your build media
  • Build media format: x64 or x86

Log file locations

Note:
Copying the files out of the folder to the desktop before compressing will allow you to get all the files, even the ones in use.
