About standard EITS workstation builds

On this page:

Overview

EITS uses Unified Device Management (UDM) services to deploy and manage standardized operating system and software configurations (builds) for Windows and macOS workstations. For any questions or concerns not addressed in this document, contact EITS.

Availability

The standard EITS workstation builds are provided as a service to full-time staff members under EITS support (for use on laptops and desktops) and to teams (for use on shared workstations). EITS builds are not available for the following use cases: servers, virtual machines, test systems, and workstations used by staff who are not supported by EITS. For more information on service availability, contact EITS.

Maintenance windows

EITS updates EITS-managed systems weekly. Maintenance windows ensure that devices are kept up to date. During the maintenance window, EITS requests that your device be powered on with an active network connection. Devices will only automatically install updates during the maintenance window.

Note:
Updates to address actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities may be installed without notice.

macOS

The general maintenance window for macOS devices is from 8pm Thursday to 4am Friday, and from noon to midnight Saturday and Sunday. EITS uses Jamf Pro to keep EITS installed applications up to date. Operating system updates will be served through the Software Update utility built into macOS.

Note:
While macOS updates will be pushed during the maintenance window, a manual restart may be required to complete installation. Be sure to restart your computer occasionally to ensure updates are fully applied.

Windows

The general maintenance window for Windows devices is from 8pm Thursday to 4am Friday, and from noon to midnight Saturday and Sunday. EITS uses the Global Application Update Service to provide operating system and application updates.

Note:
If prompted by the Software Center to restart or snooze, note that the snooze option will only close the window. A restart will still be required when the time expires. EITS is unable to change the default time.
Important:
If a device has not been updated within 42 days, it will be placed into an extended maintenance window, where it will attempt to install updates until it is up to date. A restart may be required.
