Oncourse is retired. For details, see About the Oncourse retirement.
To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. If you're not sure what your role is, see the "Role" column in the Roster tool. For permissions, see ARCHIVED: What can I do in read-only Oncourse?

Using Gradebook, you can calculate course grades, and then export them to a CSV file or a file customized for import into Indiana University's Student Information System (SIS).

To export grades for all graded items, see ARCHIVED: Viewing and exporting all student grades.

Calculating course grades

When you use Calculate Course Grades to do the course grade calculation, all blank scores are converted to zeroes. This process is irreversible.

To calculate course grades:

  1. In your site's menubar, click Gradebook.
  2. Near the top, click Course Grades.
  3. Below the Grading Table, click Calculate Course Grades.
  4. On the confirmation page, click Continue.
This action is irreversible; however, you can use the "Grade Override" column to manually override the calculated course grade.

You will receive a confirmation that course grades have been calculated.

Exporting course grades

If you plan to export and maintain local offline copies of any student information (including but not limited to names, University ID numbers, or grades), you are responsible for taking adequate security measures to handle and safeguard such data, as it remains sensitive university data.

The University Information Policy Office (UIPO) has more at Protecting Data.

For more on handling sensitive data, see:

To export course grades:

  1. In your site's menubar, click Gradebook.
  2. Near the top, click Course Grades.
  3. Use the View drop-down list to view specific groups or sections, or use the search field to find specific students.
The resulting export file will contain only the information visible from the view options you select.
  4. To export a CSV file, click Export Course Grades. Your browser will prompt you to open the file or save it to your computer.

To export a file that's customized for importing into SIS, click Export for SIS.

The default filename format for your export file will be course_grade_[courseID]__date.*. The exported fields and the names of the .xls and .csv column headers are "Student ID", "Student Name", "Section ID", and "Course Grade".
