Note:
To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. If you're not sure what your role is, see the "Role" column in the Roster tool. For permissions, see ARCHIVED: What can I do in read-only Oncourse?

For any site you create, you can import instructor-generated content (e.g., announcements, assignments, tool settings) from one or more other sites you own. Submitted material, such as completed assignments, forum postings, or grades, cannot be imported using the following methods; you must download and save such material manually.

On this page:

Importing material from another site

To import material from another site:

  1. In the menubar of the destination site, click Site Setup.
  2. At the top of the screen, click Import from Site.
  3. On the "Import Data" screen, choose one of the following:
    • I would like to replace my data: Use this option to overwrite the existing data with the imported data. This method lets you select only one source site from which to import data.
    • I would like to merge my data: Use this option to merge the imported data with the existing data. This method lets you select multiple sites from which to import data.
    • I would like to merge my user(s): Use this option if you want to import the participant roster from another site. This method does not import users provided by an automatic roster feed.
  4. Select the source site(s), and then click Continue.
  5. If applicable, under the name of the site(s) you selected, check the box next to each tool that contains source material you want to import. If a box is grayed out, it means the corresponding tool is not enabled in that site. Then, click Finish.

Importing material with combined course sites

If you are planning to combine rosters, it's best to do so before adding content. Combining rosters does not import content into the parent site. However, if you already have content in the sites you want to combine, you can still import instructor-generated content:

  1. Combine the course sites; see ARCHIVED: Combining course sites into a single parent site.
  2. Once rosters have been combined into a parent site, the tools for the original sites are disabled. To re-enable them, go to My Workspace and use Worksite Setup to add the tools that have content you want to import; see ARCHIVED: Adding, removing, hiding, or reordering tools.
  3. Go to the combined site (the destination site), and follow the directions above. When asked to choose the source site(s) and tool(s), you should be able to select the tools you enabled in the previous step. Tools you did not enable will be grayed out.
  4. Important: After importing content from your source sites, you should disable all the tools in those sites again. If you leave them enabled, students may submit material in the wrong site. Follow the directions for Worksite Setup in ARCHIVED: Adding, removing, hiding, or reordering tools, unchecking all the boxes.

Notes

  • Items saved as drafts in the source site will be imported as drafts, which means they are not immediately viewable by participants. To make them viewable, you must post them. For instructions, see ARCHIVED: Posting an assignment previously saved as a draft.
  • If you import an assignment from Assignments that's linked to a Gradebook item, both the assignment and the Gradebook item are imported, and are automatically linked. By default, the Gradebook item is not released to students.
  • When you import Gradebook settings, it may be possible to import an item with a Gradebook Item Point Value less than or equal to 0 (zero); however, if you try to edit such an item, you will receive an error message.
