Use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect to computers in Luddy IU Indianapolis classrooms

On this page:

Overview

The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at IU Indianapolis has made remote access to several computer labs available to students currently enrolled in Luddy IU Indianapolis classes.

Use the instructions below to connect to computers in IT 255 or IT 257 using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) from your personal Windows or macOS computer.

Note:
  • Due to the nature of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections, the performance of some applications, especially graphics-intensive ones, may be negatively impacted.
  • Due to software licensing restrictions, remote access to the computers in IT 257 is limited to students enrolled in specific Luddy IU Indianapolis classes.
  • If you are connecting from off campus, you first must connect to the IU SSL VPN.

Connect from a Windows computer

Microsoft Remote Desktop is included with Professional versions of Windows. If you are using a Home version of Windows, you can download Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Microsoft Store.

  1. Select the Windows search icon (the magnifying glass next to the Windows icon). Enter Remote Desktop Connection, and then select Remote Desktop Connection in the search results.
  2. In the "Remote Desktop Connection" window, enter the name of the computer to which you want to connect using this format:
    in-info-computer-number.ads.iu.edu

Replace computer-number with a number corresponding to one of the computers in IT 255 or IT 257:

    • IT 255: Computers are numbered 255-01 through 255-43.
    • IT 257: Computers are numbered 257-01 through 257-39.
  3. Select Connect.
  4. When prompted, enter your IU username and passphrase, and then select OK.

If someone else is already logged in to the computer, you will receive a notice to that effect; try connecting to another computer.

When you are finished, sign out so the computer can become available for use by someone else.

Connect from a macOS computer

To connect via RDP from a macOS computer, first download and install Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the Mac App Store.

Once Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 is installed:

  1. In Microsoft Remote Desktop, select + (the plus sign) in the Connection Center, and then select Desktop.
  2. In the "PC Name" field, enter the name of the computer to which you want to connect using this format:
    in-info-computer-number.ads.iu.edu

Replace computer-number with a number corresponding to one of the computers in IT 255 or IT 257:

    • IT 255: Computers are numbered 255-01 through 255-43.
    • IT 257: Computers are numbered 257-01 through 257-39.
  3. In the "User Account" field, enter ads.iu.edu\username (replace username with your IU username).
  4. Select Save.
  5. Double-click the newly saved desktop to initiate the connection.

If someone else is already logged in to the computer, you will receive a notice to that effect; try connecting to another computer.

When you are finished, sign out so the computer can become available for use by someone else.
