Note: The BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) service will be retired by January 1, 2015; see ARCHIVED: About the retired BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server). As of January 1, 2013, no new BES accounts are being created. UITS recommends you replace your BlackBerry with a device that is compatible with ActiveSync.

When you create a new account on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), you will receive the following message:

Welcome to the UITS BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1. Your account has been created.

Depending on the version of device software you are running on your BlackBerry, you may be able to use Wireless Enterprise Activation to more quickly get up and running.

To find the version of device software you are running, on your BlackBerry, go to "Options" and then choose "About" from the options menu.

***OPTION A:

If your BlackBerry device is running BlackBerry Handheld software version 4.0 or later, see:

ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I activate a new or replacement BlackBerry on the BES?
ARCHIVED: http://kb.iu.edu/d/aqem

Your email address: user's email
Your Enterprise Activation password: user's password

***OPTION B:

If your BlackBerry Handheld software is version 3.8 or earlier, you will need to connect your BlackBerry via the USB cable or cradle to your computer. Follow these steps:

  1. Install the latest version of the BlackBerry Desktop software on your Windows computer. See ARCHIVED: For a BlackBerry at IU, what software do I need and where do I get it? ARCHIVED: http://kb.iu.edu/d/aswr
  2. Create a separate Outlook profile for your BlackBerry. See ARCHIVED: In Outlook, how do I use a separate email profile for my BlackBerry? ARCHIVED: http://kb.iu.edu/d/anis
  3. Launch the BlackBerry Desktop software and configure your synchronization options. See ARCHIVED: With a BlackBerry, how do I reconcile my email, calendar, and other data? ARCHIVED: http://kb.iu.edu/d/alov

***ALL USERS:

Once you have successfully performed your wireless activation or initial wired synchronization, you should be able to send and receive email from your device. If not, see ARCHIVED: What should I do if my BlackBerry cannot send or receive email? ARCHIVED: http://kb.iu.edu/d/aona
