Known issues with macOS 12 (Monterey) and Apple Silicon at IU
Following is information about the status of known university-wide issues with macOS 12 (Monterey) and Apple Silicon at Indiana University.
Application | Issue description | Workaround |
---|---|---|
Applications with kernel extensions | Kernel extensions are deprecated. On Intel Macs, they must be authorized. On Macs with M1 (Apple Silicon) processors, they will not function without reducing security. |
Check with the vendor for a version that doesn't rely on kernel extensions. If one isn't available, see Kernel extensions in macOS. |
Applications made for Intel processors on Macs with M1 (Apple Silicon) chips | M1 Macs are based on the Apple Silicon architecture, which is different from Intel's chips. Some programs will not run, while others require installing Rosetta 2. |
Installing Rosetta 2 will often resolve problems; see If you need to install Rosetta on your Mac. If the program still won't run, see if its vendor has a version available that runs natively on Apple Silicon. |
32-bit applications | 32-bit applications are not supported |
Apple has ended support for 32-bit applications. Check with the vendor to see if a 64-bit version is available. |
Adobe Creative Cloud | Multiple issues | Adobe has a known issues document describing multiple issues with Monterey. |
EndNote | Previous versions of EndNote were 32-bit and thus not compatible. |
Download and install EndNote 20 from IUware. |
Kaltura Capture | Requires additional permissions to run |
On your Mac, go to , select , click the lock, and then enter your local administrator username and password to make the following changes:
|
Pulse Secure | Older versions of Pulse Secure are not compatible. |
Download and install Ivanti Secure Access (formerly Pulse Secure) from IUware.
Note:
The Pulse Secure VPN client was rebranded to Ivanti Secure Access on July 22, 2022. You may be prompted to upgrade to the new client, but either will work for connecting to the IU VPN, and your existing settings should carry over.
|
Two-Step Login (Duo) | Content restrictions in macOS can prevent the Duo prompt from displaying correctly. The Duo prompt may be replaced with a gray box. |
For help disabling content restrictions in macOS, see How do I resolve Duo Prompt display issues related to iOS or macOS content restrictions? |
Mac won't start after installing or upgrading macOS | Under rare circumstances, Intel-based Macs may fail to start after updating macOS. |
Notes:
- For macOS Big Sur hardware requirements, see Upgrade to macOS Big Sur.
- Recent versions of macOS present more security prompts, requesting explicit authorization for access to location services, contacts, calendars, reminders, and photos, as depicted in the following screenshot:
- Documentation of the initial beta release of macOS Big Sur referred to it as version 10.16.
