About accessible web design

Best practice

Current students, prospective students, employees, guests, and visitors with disabilities should have equivalent access to the information and functionality provided on IU websites and applications to individuals without disabilities.

IU Web Framework note: IU Web Framework sites generate markup designed to meet accessibility requirements by default. The IU Web Framework also requires site managers to provide accessible metadata for media assets such as images, audio, video. However, it is still possible for a site manager to upload content (such as a PDF document) that is inaccessible to individuals with disabilities.

Policy

All university websites published after November 1, 2016, are required to meet the accessibility standards described in IU's Americans with Disabilities Act Policy (UA-02).

Explanation

University websites serve information that various IU audiences require to be successful in their coursework, teaching, and professional roles. Students, faculty, and staff frequently need to use IU web applications.

IU websites and applications must be accessible so that current students, prospective students, employees, guests, and visitors with disabilities have equivalent access to the information and functionality provided to individuals without disabilities.
