About responsive website design

Best practice

Website layouts should be responsive. They should adapt to different screen sizes, devices, and browsers. Websites should not have content that is overlapping or obstructing other content when viewed on smaller screens. Content and functionality should not be hidden on smaller screens unless it is purely decorative.

IU Web Framework Note: IU Web Framework sites are designed to be responsive by default.

Policy

There is currently no IU policy requiring websites to be responsive.

Explanation

IU audiences use a variety of devices to not only view websites, but also to carry out tasks such as applying for programs. These devices include phones, tablets, desktop computers, laptops, video game consoles, TVs, and wearables.

Because IU audiences commonly use handheld devices such as phones, they expect the content and functionality of IU's websites and applications to adapt to the constrained screen sizes and limited input methods.
