ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I install ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 with access to the ESRI central license service?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

ArcGIS Desktop is available to Indiana University faculty and staff through IUware. To use ArcGIS, you must first purchase a license from UITS; see ArcGIS availability at IU Upon purchase, you must provide information about your computer system (e.g., hostname) to a GIS Support Specialist. Your ArcGIS application will not have the proper licensing to run until you do so.

Remove previous version

  1. Uninstall all earlier versions of ArcGIS software, including Desktop, ArcInfo Workstation, Tutorial Data, and any ArcGIS extensions (e.g., Image Analysis) before installing the current version. UITS recommends that you use Esri's Uninstall Utility (provided by Esri) to help you locate and remove previously loaded ArcGIS products in preparation for installing a new version of ArcGIS.
  2. After uninstalling earlier versions of ArcGIS software, UITS recommends defragmenting your computer's hard drive before you install the current ArcGIS software.

Install ArcGIS Desktop

  1. Download ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 from IUware. A current ESRI license through UITS grants access to this software.
  2. Install the software setup files to the default location (C:\IUware Online) on your hard drive. When the ArcGIS 9 Startup window appears, click Install ArcGIS Desktop.
  3. Accept the license agreement, and then click Next.
  4. Select Browse for a License Manager on the network, and then click Next.
  5. In the License Manager text window, enter esri1, and then click Next. If you cannot access this license server, try typing the full domain name of the server: esri1.uits.indiana.edu. If the full domain name doesn't work, see ARCHIVED: At IU, using ArcGIS, how do I correct the error "Hostname entered is invalid"?
  6. Choose the product level for your license type. For example, if you purchased ArcGIS ArcView, select ArcView. If you are unsure of your license type, you can change the product level after installation. The same files will be installed for ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo.
  7. Choose the Complete installation option, and then click Next.
  8. Install the software to the default location ( C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\) on your hard drive, and then click Next.
  9. You may be asked to install Python 2.5.1 if it is not already on your computer. Install the software to the default location (C:\Python25\) on your hard drive, and then click Next.
  10. Click Next again. The installation may take up to 15 minutes.
  11. When installation is complete, click Finish. You may see a window appear for Visual Basic installation. Do not close this window; it will close automatically.
  12. Open ArcGIS ArcMap to confirm a successful installation.
  13. If you see the message, "You are not licensed to use...", email the GIS Support Specialists with the hostname of your machine (case sensitive), along with the name of the license purchaser and IU department.

Configure license failover

To ensure uninterrupted access to the ESRI central license service at IU, UITS strongly suggests that you configure your computer for license server failover:

  1. From the Start menu or desktop, right-click Computer (Windows Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP). Select Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced system settings tab (Windows Vista) or the Advanced tab (Windows XP).
  3. In the System Properties window, click Environment Variables.

Note: If you had a previous version of ArcGIS installed on your computer, you may already have the license failover set. If you see ArcGIS License File listed under "System variables", confirm that the server information is correct according to the following instructions. You will not need to add another system variable for ArcGIS.

  4. To add a system variable, click New.
    1. In the "Variable name" field, type ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE.
    2. In the "Variable value" field, type 27004@esri1;27004@esri2;. Note: If you had to type the full domain name for the ESRI server during installation, you will need to type the full domain names instead: 27004@esri1.uits.indiana.edu;27004@esri2.uits.indiana.edu;.

  5. To close each of the open windows, click OK.

Install ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 Update

  1. Download ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 Update from IUware.

Note: In Windows, you will need administrator rights to install this software. You might also need to disable the User Account Control (UAC) function. To view and change your user accounts, from the Start menu, select Control Panel, and then open User Accounts.

  2. Extract the software files to the default location on your hard drive (c:\IUware Online\ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 update); see ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I compress or decompress files?
  3. When the ArcGIS 9 Startup window appears, click Install ArcGIS Desktop.
  4. Click Next, accept the license agreement, and then click Next again.
  5. After the update has successfully installed, click Finish to exit the installation.
