KeePass is a tool for passphrase vaulting. It is available for most Windows platforms, and has unofficial versions for other popular systems.

Installation

  1. Go to the KeePass Downloads site.
  2. In the "Latest Stable Release" section, click either Download Latest Stable Release for Windows or Download C++ Source Code.

Note: If you want to use KeePass for a non-Windows system, you can choose the appropriate link from the "Contributed/Unofficial KeePass Ports and Builds" section.

  3. On the following page, choose one of the three download packages available, and install it on your computer according to the directions below:
    • KeePass-X.XXx.zip : This is the binary ZIP package (portable version) of KeePass. There is no need to install it; instead, unpack it with a packer program (e.g., WinZip) and it will be ready for use.
    • KeePass-X.XXx-Setup.exe : This is a Windows installer package. Download or run the program, and follow its instructions to install KeePass onto your computer.
    • KeePass-X.XXx-Src.zip : This is the full source code for KeePass. It includes all code needed to compile the program.

Creating a database

  1. Start KeePass. From the File menu, select New Database. Alternatively, you can click the leftmost button in the toolbar.
  2. You will be prompted to enter a master key or password for the database. Enter a secure passphrase, and then re-enter it when prompted. Click OK.

Note: You will need this passphrase to decrypt the database.

  3. To add an entry to the database, from the toolbar, click Add Entry (with an image of a gold key and a green arrow).
  4. For each entry, you will have to provide the following information:
    • Group: Select the group in which you want to store the entry.
    • Title: This is a descriptive name for the entry.
    • Username
    • URL: This is the location of the password- or passphrase-protected site.
    • Password: This is the password or passphrase to be stored.
    • Notes

The "Quality:" field depicts the strength of your chosen passphrase. When you have finished the entry, click OK.

  5. To save the database, from the toolbar, click Save (with an image of a disk). Enter a name and location for the database.
