To carry out the instructions below, you must have administrative credentials on the computer on which you're configuring BitLocker.

To turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption:

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel, then Security, and finally BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  2. From the "BitLocker Drive Encryption" page, find the volume on which you want BitLocker drive encryption turned off, and click Turn Off BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  3. In the What level of decryption do you want? dialog box, click Decrypt the volume.

For more information about the options available (Decrypt the volume or Disable BitLocker Drive Encryption), see Microsoft's Windows Vista help document What is the difference between turning off and disabling BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Warning: If you work with any data containing protected health information (PHI), you should encrypt it whenever possible. Encryption is also recommended for institutional data classified as Critical. For more, see Recommended tools for encrypting data containing HIPAA-regulated PHI and About sensitive data at IU
