Primary UITS contact: Rick Jackson

Completed: August 29, 2007

Description: This project will upgrade the existing Microsoft Exchange 2003 environment to Exchange 2007. This upgrade includes improvements to the Outlook Web App (OWA) interface and support for Windows Mobile 6.0 devices, as well as usability improvements and new communication features for Outlook 2007 users.

Outcome: User mailboxes will be migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. The new features of Exchange 2007 and larger quotas will be available as users migrate to Exchange 2007.

Milestones and status:

  • Project kickoff (July 13, 2007)
  • Complete technical migration plan (August 2007)
  • Make test environment available (August 2007)
  • Prepare Knowledge Base documents for Exchange 2007 (August-September 2007)
  • Pilot user migrations (September 2007)
  • OWA server migrations (September 2007)
  • SMTP server migrations (September 2007)
  • Mailbox server migrations (October 2007)

Comment process: Email exadmin@iu.edu.

Benefits:

  • Entirely new OWA interface with new Exchange 2007 features added (Document Access/Rendering, Out-Of-Office functionality, Instant Search, etc.)
  • Support for the new features of Windows Mobile 6.0 devices
  • Integration with Office Communications Server 2007 (UniCom project)
  • Support for larger mailboxes (500MB default) and instant server-side searching due to architectural changes in the 64-bit platform
  • Improved resource booking system and scheduling assistant
  • Autodiscover feature allows Outlook 2007 to configure a profile with only an email address and password provided

Primary client: Faculty and staff

Client impact: Exchange users of the OWA interface will need to learn how to navigate the new web interface. Users of Outlook 2007 will gain new functionality for calendaring and out-of-office settings. Each user's mailbox will be unavailable during the actual time it is being moved. Users running Outlook 97, Outlook 98, or Outlook 2000 must upgrade to newer versions. After their mailboxes have been moved to Exchange 2007, users running Outlook 2002 or 2003 may need to recreate their Outlook profiles if they do not connect before their old Exchange 2003 mailbox server is decommissioned.
