ARCHIVED: IU Secure wireless connections: Mac OS X 10.4

Note:
To gain full Internet access for your device on the IU network, you need to register the device's MAC address. Before doing so, your device will not receive an IP address that allows a successful Internet connection.

Note: Use these instructions to configure Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to connect to the IU Secure SSID with AirPort Extreme. For Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), see IU Secure wireless connections: Mac OS X.

  1. From the AirPort menu, select Open Internet Connect....
  2. With the Internet Connect window open, from the File menu, choose New 802.1X Connection. If this menu item is grayed out, proceed to the next step.
  3. In the resulting window, click the 802.1X button (the orange padlock).
  4. From the menu next to "Configuration:", select Edit Configurations....
  5. In the Configuration window, in the "Description:" field, enter WPA: IU Secure.
  6. In the "User Name:" field, enter your IU Network ID username. Leave the "Password:" field blank.
  7. In the "Wireless Network:" field, enter IU Secure.
  8. In the list to the right of "Authentication:", uncheck TTLS and EAP-FAST, leaving only PEAP checked.

Note: Do not configure PEAP with an outer identity.

  9. Click OK to exit the Configuration sheet, and then quit Internet Connect.
  10. From the AirPort menu, select IU Secure.
  11. When you first connect to the IU Secure SSID, you will be prompted to accept the server's certificate. Click Show Certificate, and verify that:
    • The certificate is signed by "Thawte Premium Server CA" or "thawte Primary Root CA".
    • The certificate name is net-auth-1.noc.iu.edu.

  12. Check Always trust these certificates, and click Continue.
  13. You should now be connected to the IU Secure SSID; if you are prompted for your credentials again, enter your IU Network ID.
