Things to consider

UITS recommends installing Identity Finder Endpoint on university-owned computers. Also, UITS Leveraged Services offers an enterprise service that can provide added protection; for more, consult your IT Pro or computer administrator.

You can use Identity Finder to search your own data and other files stored on devices used for university work and on university-owned systems. Technicians or administrators can use this tool to search data and other files stored in individual computer accounts on university-owned systems. However, in accordance with IU IT Policy Privacy of Electronic Information and Information Technology Resources (IT-07), they must first either:

  • Have written permission from the individual to whom the account or device has been assigned or attributed, or
  • Provide written notification to the individual(s) describing who will use the tool, how, and for what purpose, as well as anticipated use of the resulting information.

Administrators should avoid opening the files Identity Finder locates; instead, they should send the names of the resulting file locations to the owner of the account or system where the files are stored, directing the owner to review the files and take appropriate action.

Upon completing a scan, you should either secure the Identity Finder log with a strong password or passphrase, select Ignore, Shred, Scrub, or use other available options.

Installing Identity Finder

Windows

To install Identity Finder for Windows:

  1. To download Identity Finder, follow the instructions in ARCHIVED: Download and install Identity Finder Endpoint
  2. Open the Identity Finder installer.
  3. In the "Welcome to the Identity Finder Setup Wizard" window, click Next.
  4. Read and agree to the license agreement, and then click Next.
  5. In the "Custom Setup" window, if the default settings are acceptable, click Next.
  6. On the "Ready to install" page, click Install.
  7. After the installation is complete, click Finish to exit the Setup Wizard. If you do not want to launch Identity Finder, uncheck Launch Identity Finder.

Mac OS X

  1. To download Identity Finder, follow the instructions in ARCHIVED: Download and install Identity Finder Endpoint
  2. Double-click the disk image you downloaded from IUware.
  3. In the window that opens, drag Identity Finder to Applications.
    Note:
For this step, you may need to enter administrator credentials.

Upgrading Identity Finder

If you use the version of Identity Finder from IUware, do not enable automatic update notifications; instead, download any new versions from IUware. Because of the way the installation package is maintained, using the installer available from Identity Finder will delete all saved settings, including the license file. This will cause the application to become unlicensed and unusable.
