Primary UITS contact: Leroy Marburger

Completed: December 6, 2010

Description: Install and deploy a digital TV (Internet Protocol TV) headend within the Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Facility.

Outcome: Provide digital television services, delivered as multicasts, via the IU network infrastructure.

Milestones and status:

  • Mid-2006: Began technical analysis
  • Late 2006: Released an RFI
  • 2007: Negotiated non-disclosure agreements
  • Early 2008: Demonstrated a working prototype
  • Mid-2008: Released an RFP and selected a vendor
  • May-June 2009: Headend equipment installed at IUPUI
  • August 2009: Digital TV service deployed to Ball Annex using physical set-top boxes
  • January 2010: Implemented corrective actions to address problems identified in a December 2009 survey of Ball Annex residents

Comment process: Contact the project lead via email.

Benefits:

  • An IU infrastructure that can provide high-definition and interactive television services
  • An improved emergency alert system
  • Ability to deliver TV services to personal computers
  • Virtually unlimited capacity (number of channels)
  • An electronic program guide

Risks: This is a first-of-its-kind system. We are mitigating risks by running the digital system in parallel with the existing analog system for the first few months.

Issues: Communication of the changes and impacts; testing and deployment of the virtual set-top box software for Windows and Macintosh computers

Primary client: Housing and Residence Life on the IUPUI campus (initially).

Client impact: Resident students will have the option of viewing TV on their computers, which could eliminate the need to bring television sets to campus. Any television now connected to the IUPUI cable TV system will be impacted.
