Description: In spring 2009, the High Performance Systems (HPS) group will retire the Libra cluster, which has been in service since 2005. Accounts are available on the newer Quarry cluster, a general-purpose Unix computing environment. The Research Database Cluster (RDC) will remain in service.

Milestones and status:

  • November 5, 2008: Represent change at Change Management
  • November 12, 2008: Notify RDC users that the RDC nodes will remain in service
  • November 17, 2008: Update MOTD on Libra cluster
  • November 17, 2008: Add boilerplate text to Libra Knowledge Base documents
  • November 19, 2008: Post announcement in UITS Monitor
  • December 2, 2008: Disable accounts on cluster based on information from Account Management Services
  • December 3, 2008: Email retirement notice to active account holders
  • January 12, 2009: Stop installing new software
  • February 13, 2009: Phase I of KB document review complete
  • February 16, 2009: Stop creating new accounts
  • April 15, 2009: Review of software on Libra completed by High Performance Applications (HPA) group
  • April 20, 2009: Send email reminder to active account holders
  • May 15, 2009: Additional software packages installed on Quarry and Big Red to complement software available on Libra
  • June 1, 2009: Software to be disabled on Libra:
    • NAG programming libraries, visualization and tools: available on Quarry
    • IMSL libraries: available on Quarry
    • Climate Data Operators (CDO): available on Quarry
    • SimWalk2: available on Big Red
    • Merlin: available on Big Red
  • June 15, 2009: Email a reminder to Libra account holders
  • June 30, 2009: Disable interactive login
  • July 30, 2009: Power down hardware (JS21s and Libra00)

Benefits: The Quarry cluster is the newest supercomputer available at IU and provides a more robust environment for stat/math and other application software.
