ARCHIVED: Completed project: IUB campus edge switch upgrade
Primary UITS contact: Jennifer Van Horn
Completed: August 17, 2011
Description: Install new HP5400 series switches, replacing older HP4100 series and HP4000 series switches. The HP4000 switches are two generations old and are missing several required features. The HP4100s still lack some features of the newer HP5400 series switches.
Outcome: A new advanced intelligent edge switch backbone will provide more reliability and faster switch ports for users. The new switches will also support Radius authentication, which the HP4000s do not support. The HP5400 series switches will support a 10 GB backbone network, can provide power over Ethernet (PoE) to end devices, and offer other advanced features.

Benefits: Faster switch ports, PoE available on the switch, advanced configuration options for future growth and network changes
Client impact: Change will be transparent to most users. User connections will continue to work as before, but users with new wiring will see an increased connection speed. Downtime will be limited as much as possible and will be scheduled with LSPs.
