Primary UITS contact: Jason Abels

Completed: January 24, 2011

Description: The University Information Security Office (UISO) rolled out a new vulnerability scanning system to replace the aging ISS Internet Scanners.

Outcome: The end of this project was marked by the full retirement of the old ISS Internet Scanners.

Milestones and status: The project was completed with the full retirement of Internet Scanners.

Comment process: Email scanner-admin@uiso.iu.edu.

Benefits: The new scanning system performs scans much more quickly and efficiently. In addition, it allows us to scan hosts behind the UITS Machine Room firewall without impacting performance.

Client impact: Clients can interface with the new scanner much like they did with the old scanner. The major difference is the notion of units. Machines belong to units, and users can be in multiple units. Notifications about scans are sent to units, not users.

Project team:

  • Jason Abels, UISO Scanner Administrator (deployment and website development)
  • Andrew Korty, Deputy Information Security Officer (website development)
