ARCHIVED: Read your Imail or Umail on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad

Overview

Note:

Students who are admitted but not yet enrolled can only open web pages on eduroam or IU Secure. Other internet services (for example, email or chat clients, gaming services, etc.) will not work until you have enrolled status.

Imail

Important:
Imail was retired on November 19, 2019. You can no longer access your Imail account and its associated services (for example, calendar and contact lists).

You can connect to your Imail account through Exchange ActiveSync:

  1. From the Home screen:
    • iOS 11: Choose Settings > Mail > Accounts & Passwords > Add Account > Exchange.
    • iOS 10: Choose Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Exchange.
      Note:
      Older versions of iOS may have a Mail, Contacts, Calendars item instead of Mail, and may not have a separate Accounts.
  2. Enter the following:
    • Email: username@imail.iu.edu
    • Description: This is an optional field. You can leave it blank, or enter something like My Imail.
  3. Tap Next. If you're asked to sign into your account using Microsoft, tap Configure Manually. Enter your ARCHIVED: Imail vendor password, not your IU passphrase. Tap Next again.
  4. You may need to fill out the following fields:
    • Domain: Leave this field blank.
    • Username: username@imail.iu.edu
    • Server: outlook.office365.com
  5. Tap Next.
  6. At this point, you can choose to have your contacts, calendars, and mail synchronized with your phone. Once you have made your selections, tap Save.

If you are unable to connect to your Imail account through ActiveSync, try connecting your device to an IU network (wireless or the IU VPN).

Note:
If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your iOS device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.

Umail

Important:
Umail is only for former students who do not have an active status (for example, faculty, staff) and who separated from IU prior to March 11, 2018; see ARCHIVED: About the Umail upgrade. Current students use ARCHIVED: Gmail at IU. If you're unsure about what type of account you have, contact your campus Support Center.
Important:
Umail was retired on November 19, 2019. You can no longer access your Umail account and its associated services (such as email or Sites).

You can connect to your Umail account by configuring it as a Gmail account on your device:

  1. Enable IMAP for your Umail account; see ARCHIVED: Enable IMAP for your Umail account.
  2. From the Home screen:
    • iOS 11: Choose Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Add Account > Google.
    • iOS 10: Choose Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Google.
      Note:
      Older versions of iOS may have a Mail, Contacts, Calendars item instead of Mail, and may not have a separate Accounts. Also, you may see Gmail rather than Google.
  3. When prompted, complete the following fields:
  4. Tap Save.

If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your iOS device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.
