Get the Home Use edition of JAWS

Set up your Home Use account
- Press
Ctrl-Win-Enter
to launch Windows Narrator. - Open Microsoft Edge.
- Press
Ctrl-l
to go to the address bar. Put in the address:
Then presshttps://portal.freedomscientific.com/HomeUse/HigherEd
Enter
. - Narrator will read the title of the page that loads (“Is my email eligible to download a license?”). Press
Caps Lock
-Spacebar to make sure scan mode is turned on, and then pressE
to move focus to the “Email Address” text box. Press the Spacebar, and then enter your IU username followed by@iu.edu
(do this no matter what your IU email address is), and then pressEnter
. - The page will refresh with a notification that you are entitled to a Home Annual License. Tab to the link, and press the Spacebar.
- You are now on the registration page and need to fill in the following fields:
- Email (required): The email address you entered on the previous page should be in this text field. Press

to go to the next text box. - Confirm email (required): Put in your IU email address a second time, and then press
Tab
to go to the next text box. - First Name (required): Enter your first name, and then press
Tab
to go to the next text box. - Last Name (required): Enter your last name, and then press

to go to the next text box. - Company (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press
Tab
to go to the next text box. - Phone number (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press

to go to the next text box. - Address (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press

to go to the next text box. - City (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press

to go to the next text box. - State/Province (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press

to go to the next text box. - Country (required): Press the Spacebar on the drop-down box and use the up and down arrow to select

. Then press the Spacebar. Once you are done, press - Postal Code (required): Enter your ZIP code, and press
Tab
to go to the next text box. - Password (required): Create a password for your Home Use account and store it somewhere safe. Your password needs to be eight characters or longer, with at least one letter and one number. After typing the password, press
Tab
to go to the next text box. - Confirm password (required): Enter the password again. When you are done, press
Tab
.
- Email (required): The email address you entered on the previous page should be in this text field. Press
- Focus will now be on the button; press the Spacebar to register your account. The page will reload with a registration confirmation.
- Close Edge and go to your IU email account. Look for a message from Freedom Scientific SW Licensing with the subject line "Confirm your Freedom Scientific portal account". In the message, select the link.
Your Home Use account is now registered, and you can now download and activate the Home Use version of JAWS.
Download and install JAWS Home Edition
- If Narrator isn't already running, press
Ctrl-Win-Enter
to launch it. - Open Microsoft Edge.
- Press
Ctrl-l
to go to the address bar and put in the address:

. - The Freedom Scientific licensing portal will load with focus in the “Email” field. Enter your IU email address, and then press
Tab
. - Enter the password you created for your Home Use account.
- Press

until you get to the button, and then press the Spacebar. - You will now be on the "User Portal for My Products" page. Press
d
until you get to the "Main" landmark. - Press
Tab
until you get to link, and then press the Spacebar. - The page will reload as the "User Portal for My Products" page. Press
d
until you get to the "Main" landmark. - Press

until you get to , and then press the Spacebar. - The “Product details” page will load, listing the product name, the date it expires, the serial number, and a text field for entering notes. Focus will be on
- To create a note for this install:
- Press
Shift-Tab
until you get to "Notes" field, and then enter the note for this installation. - Press
Tab
to get to , and then press the Spacebar to add the note. - Press
Tab
until get to , and then press the Spacebar.

- If you don't want to add a note, make sure the focus is on , and then press the Spacebar.

- To create a note for this install:
- A "File Download" notification pop-up will appear asking to download the software onto your computer. Focus will be on the button, so press the Spacebar.

to go to the download notification box at the bottom of the browser window. - Press

until you get to , and then press the Spacebar. - After the download completes, the download notification box will update with several options. Press
Shift-Tab
until you get to , and then press the Spacebar. - In the "Setup JAWS for [Your Name]" window, press
Tab
until you get to , and then press the Spacebar. - You will be prompted to indicate whether you want to install JAWS. Press

until you get to , and then press the Spacebar. - In the “JAWS install” window, press

until you get to the checkbox for , and then press the Spacebar. - Press

until get to the button, and then press the Spacebar to begin the installation. - When the installer is finished, it will say, "JAWS Install window close button". Press the Spacebar to close the installer.
- The "JAWS setup information" window will ask to restart your computer. Tab to the button, and then press the Spacebar. When your computer restarts, the installation is complete.
Set up JAWS
- Log back into your computer.
- The JAWS startup wizard will appear and ask if you want to provide anonymous usage data.
- If you want to participate, press

until you get to the "Participate" checkbox, and then press the Spacebar. To continue, pressTab

, and then press the Spacebar. - If you don't want to participate, press

- On the "Speech Settings" page, set your preferred rate of speech, punctuation, typing echo, and volume settings. To continue, press

until you get to , and then press the Spacebar. - On the "JAWS settings" page, set whether JAWS runs at the logon screen, after logon for all users, or is run from the system tray, and whether it prompts you each time you exit JAWS. To continue, press

, and then press the Spacebar. - On the "Common Options" page, set your preferences for smart navigation, forms mode, keyboard layout and
NumLock
key state. To continue, pressTab

, and then press the Spacebar. - On the "Verbosity Settings" page, set your preferences for tutor messages, access key, verbosity level, and graphic verbosity. To continue, press

, and then press the Spacebar. - On the "Braille Translation settings" page, set your preferences for language, output, and input. To continue, press

, and then press the Spacebar. - On the "Braille Settings" page, set your preferences for Braille mode, Flash messages, reverse panning buttons, word wrap, placement of status cells, and dot firmness. To continue, press

Your Home Use copy of JAWS is now set up and running on your computer.
