Get the Home Use edition of JAWS

Set up your Home Use account

  1. Press Ctrl-Windows-Enter to launch Windows Narrator.
  2. Open Microsoft Edge.
    Important:

    Microsoft Edge Legacy support ended on March 9, 2021. If you still have Edge Legacy, UITS recommends installing the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge by running Windows Update.

  3. Press Ctrl-L to go to the address bar. Put in the address https://portal.freedomscientific.com/HomeUse/HigherEd, and then press Enter.
  4. A page will load saying "Does My university participate?" and put focus in the "College Email Address" text box. In this text box, type your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). Press Enter.
  5. The page will refresh and will display congratulation text below where you put in your email. Tab to the Continue to registration link, and press the Spacebar.
  6. You are now on the registration page and need to fill in the following fields:
    • Email (required): The email address you entered on the previous page should be in this text field. Press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Confirm email (required): Put in your IU email address a second time, and then press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • First Name (required): Type your first name, and then press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Last Name (required): Type your last name, and then press Tab to go the next text box
    • Company (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Phone number (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Address (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • City (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • State/Province (optional): Whether you fill it out or not, press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Country (required): Press the Spacebar on the drop-down box and use the up and down arrow to select United States. Then press the Spacebar. Once you are done, press Tab to go the next text box.
    • Postal Code (required): Type your zip code, and press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Password (required): Create a password for your Home Use account and store it somewhere safe. Your password needs to be eight characters or longer, with at least one letter and one number. After typing the password, press Tab to go to the next text box.
    • Confirm password (required): Type the password again. When you are done, press Tab.
  7. Focus will now be on the Register button; press the Spacebar to register your account. The page will reload and become a registration confirmation.
  8. Close Edge.
  9. Go to your IU email account and look for a message from Freedom Scientific SW Licensing with a subject line of "Confirm your Freedom Scientific portal account". In the message, select the Confirm your portal account here link.
  10. A web browser will load and thank you for confirming your email. Close the browser.

Your Home Use account is now registered, and you can now download and activate the Home Use version of JAWS.

Download and install JAWS Home Edition

  1. If Narrator isn't already running, press Ctrl-Windows-Enter to launch it.
  2. Open Microsoft Edge.
    Important:

  3. Press Ctrl-L to go to the address bar and put in the address https://portal.freedomscientific.com/Account/Login. Press Enter.
  4. The "Freedom Scientific Portal for Licensing of Jaws and ZoomText" webpage will load and focus will be in the email text field. Type your IU email address, and press Tab.
  5. Type the password you just created for your Home Use account.
  6. Press Tab until you get to the Sign In button, and then press the Spacebar.
  7. You will now be on the "User Portal for My Products" page. Press d until you get to the "Main" landmark.
  8. Press Tab until you get to Add JAWS link, and then press the Spacebar.
  9. The page will reload as the "User Portal for My Products" page. Press d until you get to the "Main" landmark.
  10. Press Tab until you get to JAWS Home Annual 0 of 3 installs detected link, and then press the Spacebar.
  11. The page will change to "Product details", listing the product name, when it will expire, the serial number, and a text field in which to enter notes. Focus will be on the Activate this computer link.
    • If you want to create a note for this install, do the following:
      1. Press Shift-Tab until you get to "Notes" editing field, and enter the note for this installation.
      2. Press Tab to get to the Add Notes button, and press the Spacebar to add the note.
      3. Tab to the Activate this computer button, and press the Spacebar.
    • If you don't want to add a note, press the Spacebar on the Activate this computer button.
  12. A "File Download" notification pop-up will appear asking to download the software onto your computer. Focus will be on the OK button, so press the Spacebar.
  13. Press Alt-n to go to the download notification box at the bottom of the browser window.
  14. Press Tab until you get to the Save button, and then press the Spacebar.
  15. Once the download is completed, the download notification box will update and have several options. Press Shift-Tab until you get to the Run button, and then press the Spacebar.
  16. The "Setup JAWS for [Your Name]" window appears saying "JAWS is not installed on this computer. Do you want to install and then activate for use?" Press Tab until you get to the Yes, Install and Activate button, and then press the Spacebar.
  17. User Account Control will ask if you want to install Freedom Scientific JAWS 2019. Press Tab until you get to the Yes button, and then press the Spacebar.
  18. The JAWS install window will appear. Press Tab until you get to the checkbox for I accept the license agreement, and then press the Spacebar to check the box.
  19. Tab to the Install button, and then press the Spacebar.
  20. The installer will run on your computer. When the install finishes, it will say "JAWS Install window close button". Press the Spacebar to close the installer.
  21. The "JAWS setup information" window will ask to restart your computer. Tab to the Yes button, and press the Spacebar.

Your computer will restart, after which the download and installation of JAWS is complete.

Set up JAWS

  1. Log back into your computer.
  2. The JAWS startup wizard will appear and ask if you want to provide anonymous usage data.
    • If you do want to participate, press Tab until you get to the Participate checkbox, and press the Spacebar to select it. Then tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar.
    • If you don't want to participate, press Tab until you get to the Next button, and then press the Spacebar.
  3. On the "Speech Settings" page, you can set your rate of speech, punctuation, typing echo, and whether to lower the volumes of other apps when JAWS is speaking. Once you have the settings you like, tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar.
  4. On the "JAWS settings" page, you can set whether JAWS runs at the logon screen, after logon for all users, or is run from the system tray, and whether it prompts you each time you exit JAWS. Once you have the settings you like, tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar.
  5. On the "Common Options" page, you can set your preferences for smart navigation, forms mode, keyboard layout and NumLock key state. Once you have the settings you like, tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar.
  6. On the "Verbosity Settings" page, you can set your preferences for tutor messages, access key, verbosity level, and graphic verbosity. Once you have the settings you like, tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar.
  7. On the "Braille Translation settings" page, you can set your preferences for language, output, and input. Once you have the settings you like, tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar.
  8. On the "Braille Settings" page, you can set your preferences for Braille mode, Flash messages, reverse panning buttons, word wrap, placement of status cells, and dot firmness. Once you have the settings you like, tab to the Next button and press the Spacebar to finish the wizard.
  9. A User Account Control window will appear asking to allow Freedom Scientific Elevation to make changes to your computer. Tab to the Yes button and press the Spacebar.

Your Home Use copy of JAWS is now set up and running on your computer.
