In June, 2011, Indiana University's contract with SafeWord expired, This changed the way users authenticate to secure systems with institutional or sensitive data, moving from SafeWord cards to OTP (One Time Password) tokens. If you access secure systems as part of your work at IU, you may need to get an OTP token; see ARCHIVED: How do I get an OTP (One Time Password) token?

Team members from UITS Support Center ACES (Accounts and Critical Enterprise Systems), Identity Management Systems, and the University Information Security Office worked together to plan and accomplish the migration with minimal cost to departments. Over 5,000 SafeWord cards were exchanged, free of charge, for OTP tokens.

Between May and September of 2011, over 200 departmental coordinators throughout the state assisted with distribution, collected SafeWord cards, and returned them to the ACES for responsible disposal.

For further information about OTP, email otp@iu.edu or contact your campus Support Center.
