ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I link my Umail account to an outside Gmail account?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.
Important:
Umail is only for former students who do not have an active status (for example, faculty, staff) and who separated from IU prior to March 11, 2018; see ARCHIVED: About the Umail upgrade. Current students use ARCHIVED: Gmail at IU. If you're unsure about what type of account you have, contact your campus Support Center.

At Indiana University, you may set up your Umail account so that it is synchronized with a Gmail account. Email messages received by the Umail account will then be forwarded to the Gmail account you specify. To link your accounts:

  1. Enable POP for your Umail account; if you have already enabled POP, skip to the next step.
    1. Log into your Umail account at https://umail.iu.edu/.
    2. Click the gear icon, and select Settings.
    3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
    4. Select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.
    5. Click Save Changes.
  2. Log into the Gmail account where you want all Umail messages to be forwarded.
  3. In the upper right corner, select the gear icon; from the drop-down menu that appears, select Settings.
  4. In the "Settings" window, select the Accounts tab.
  5. In the "Check mail from other accounts (using POP3)" section, select Add a POP3 mail account you own.
  6. In the pop-up box that appears, enter the email address you wish to check. Be sure to supply your full Umail address, in the form of username@umail.iu.edu. Select Next Step.
  7. A window will appear asking you to enter your mail settings for the supplied email address.
    • The username field will be filled completed, and you can leave the checkboxes as they are. For the password field, be sure to enter your ARCHIVED: vendor password and not your university passphrase.
    • In the server drop-down menu, select Other... and type pop.gmail.com.
    • Make sure the port number is 995.

    Select Add Account.

  8. Choose whether you would like to send mail from your designated Umail address. An affirmative answer will allow you to send mail within Google from your Umail address. If you wish to transition to the Gmail account permanently, it is best not to choose this option. For more about how this service works and the steps necessary to complete the setup, see Google Help's Sending mail from a different address.
  9. If you answered "No" to the prior question, select Finish.
