At IU, how can I read my Imail or Umail on my Android device?

Important:
UITS is preparing to retire the Imail service, and no new Imail accounts are being created. If you are currently using Imail, you are not affected at this time. You will have at least six months' notice before Imail is discontinued. For more, see About the Imail retirement.
Note:
Students who are admitted but not yet enrolled can only open web pages on the IU Secure network. Other Internet services, e.g., email or chat clients, gaming services, etc., will not work until you have enrolled status.

Imail

You can connect to your Imail account through Exchange ActiveSync (labeled "Corporate" on some devices):

  1. From the Applications menu, select Setting Accounts & sync > Add Account > Exchange or Corporate > Next > Sign In.
  2. Enter the following settings:
  3. Tap Next and enter the following settings:
    • Domain\Username: username@imail.iu.edu
    • Password: Imail vendor password (not your IU passphrase)
    • Server: outlook.office365.com
  4. Leave Use secure connection (SSL) checked, and Accept all SSL certificates unchecked. Tap Next.
  5. At this point, you can choose to set your email checking frequency, synchronization preferences, and other options. When finished, tap Next.
  6. Enter a name for your account, if you want; you may also leave this blank. Tap Done.
Note:
If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your Android device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.

Umail

You can connect to your Umail account by signing in through Google:

  1. From the Applications menu, select Settings > Accounts & sync > Add Account > Google > Next > Sign In.
  2. When prompted to "Enter your email", enter your Umail username, which is a combination of your IU Network ID and @umail.iu.edu; for example:
  3. username@umail.iu.edu

    Note:
This username@umail.iu.edu is not your actual IU email address, and you will use it only when you configure a device to read your Umail. Your IU email address is the combination of your Network ID username and a university-wide or campus-based domain (e.g., username@iupui.edu), as explained in At IU, what is my email address?
  4. When prompted for a password, enter your Umail vendor password (not your IU passphrase). If you haven't set your Umail vendor password yet, or have forgotten it, see At IU, how do I set or reset my vendor password for Imail or Umail?
  5. Tap Sign In. The device will verify your information and update with server information. Once this is complete, the Data & Synchronization options screen will appear. Check the Sync Gmail box, and select any other synchronization options you want. When done, tap Finish, and then Finish Setup.

If you are unable to connect to your Umail account through Google Sign In, your Umail account might be locked out. To unlock your Umail account, see Why can't I access my Umail account from my mobile device, or a POP or IMAP email client?

Note:
If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your Android device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.
