What it does

The Oncourse Reports tool can aggregate and summarize data from other Oncourse tools; at Indiana University, it is used primarily with the portfolio environment (see ARCHIVED: Portfolio environment). You can use Reports to see summaries of information stored in various portfolio forms. The tool supports the creation of:

  • Live detailed and summary reports
  • Snapshots of report data for a particular moment in time
  • File exports to .csv format for further manipulation in Microsoft Excel or statistics software

Key concepts

Artifacts: A document or file that demonstrates accomplishment of a task or goal

Forms: In the Oncourse portfolio environment, forms are used to collect, store, and display information in matrices and presentations. The Reports tool can aggregate and summarize data stored in forms; currently, reports are limited to data stored in matrices and their associated forms.

Report definitions: Report definitions determine the content and how it's displayed in the report. They are XML files that query the Oncourse database and stored XSD form instances. An XML renderer (XSLT file) is used to display the results. Definitions imported into the Reports tool are available for use in all portfolio sites at IU; normally, the Oncourse development team creates these report definitions.

Snapshots: A snapshot can capture report data at a particular moment in time. Saving snapshots allows you to compare data and identify trends over time. You can also save a live snapshot, which will be updated as the data changes, for more convenient access to report data.
