ARCHIVED: Can I purchase cloud computing services at IU?

Through Indiana University's partnership with Penguin Computing, members of the US higher education community (including IU faculty, staff, and departments) can purchase on-demand computational and storage services through the Penguin-On-Demand (POD) "Cluster as a Service" offering. The POD service provides the convenience and flexibility of other cloud computing providers, with two important differences:

  • The POD service employs a real high-performance supercomputer cluster, not virtual machines.
  • Because the POD system (Rockhopper) is physically located inside the IU Data Center, researchers can be assured their data are securely stored and maintained.

Various pricing options are available, with costs comparable to commercial cloud services. For details, see Penguin Computing's POD Pricing page.

To request a Rockhopper account, you must be affiliated with a US institution of higher education (i.e., one with a .edu domain name) or a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC). To get started, complete and submit the account request form.

Note: To pay for your Rockhopper account, you'll need to enter your credit card information while completing the account request form. To arrange an alternative payment method, or if you have questions, contact Penguin Computing directly (pod@penguincomputing.com).
