Primary UITS contact: Justin P. Peters

Completed: August 17, 2012

Description: Using enterprise data maintained by the University Architect's office and the IU Department of Facilities, an interactive map website was developed that allows users to search for various features on each campus, such as buildings, parking areas, bike racks, and other GIS layers. Users can turn layers on or off, and add text and graphics to generate printable custom maps (in PDF format) to highlight areas of interest on each campus. Users can measure distances between campus features, generate hyperlinks to specific areas, and use the map as a tool for planning activities. Each campus map is accessible from the main IU Campus Maps page.

Using the Academic Site license that UITS administers for Esri software, ArcGIS Server and the map service is hosted on a virtual server within IU's Intelligent Infrastructure. The map service retains the standardized look and feel agreed upon by the IU Office of Communication and Creative Services, and is used by all IU campuses on their respective IU Mobile applications. The service can be used in desktop GIS applications, mobile devices, and web clients.

Milestones and status:

  • August 18, 2011: IU Bloomington campus map application entered production prior to fall 2011 classes
  • October 27, 2011: Incorporated the new map service into IU Mobile
  • January 3, 2012: Received IU South Bend campus map data for development
  • May 15, 2012: IUPUI and South Bend campus map applications entered production
  • August 17, 2012: Four new campus map applications were ready to enter production, pending the delivery of top banner images from Creative Services:

Three previously created map applications for the South Bend, IUPUI, and IUB campuses switched to the updated map service
