Primary UITS contact: Chris Hanna

Completed: June 29, 2012

Description: Currently, IU hosts approximately 8000 functional mailing lists. The IU List project aims to replace the aging LISTSERV mailing list software and related hardware with a modern, user-friendly and low-cost replacement in a virtual environment.

Outcome: Deployment of new mailing list service and migration of active lists and subscribers.

Milestones and status:

  • Test deployment: Create lists, migrate sample lists, test features and decide on requirements (February 2012-March 2, 2012)
  • Prepare for production: Freeze feature requests, implement any missing features or correct bugs, create final mail architecture, and generate supporting documentation. An opportunity for IT professionals to gain early access to the system will be provided in mid-March. (March 2, 2012-April 3, 2012)
  • Production moves: Migration window for list community. Notifications will be sent to list owners prior to this window. (April 3, 2012-June 4, 2012).
  • Post-migration: Wind down remaining LISTSERV lists in an orderly fashion. (June 4, 2012-July 1, 2012)

Benefits: The new IU List service will provide an open, customizable architecture for lists. It will also provide cost savings, an easy-to-use web interface to list management, and much improved auditing and issue tracking.

Related information: The IU List product is based on Sympa, with several customizations. See http://www.sympa.org/overview/features.

Client impact: Anyone who is an owner or subscriber to a LISTSERV list is affected. This includes practically every IU user.

List sponsors, who created the list in MAS, will be provided a migration window (60 days) to move their lists via an online form. An automated process will migrate the LISTSERV lists and subscribers to the new system, translating LISTSERV settings into appropriate IU List settings.

Although subscribers are moved automatically, anyone using the web interface must first generate a password for the IU List website. Passwords from LISTSERV are not carried over to the new system.
